As the name clearly puts it, the Mashujaa Awards is an annual event meant to recognize, appreciate and award heroes in different fields of specialization. Speaking to Fotophreak Magazine, the organizers of this event termed it as one that is aimed at appreciating both the reigning heroes and the fallen soldiers, some of who may include former presidents of this republic. This is one of the most notable and distinct features of this award which sets them apart from the other industry awards.
Since its launch in 2013 and first showing in 2014, the awards ceremony seamlessly took up the spirit of the new constitution, and started awarding the best performing elected leaders. Five most nominated and best performing Governors, Senators, MP’s, MCA’s and Campus leaders would then face off in a voting competition, and the winner would then be declared the Mashujaa Awards Governor/ Senator of the year…Et.Al. In this fourth edition, however, the leadership category was excluded owing to the fact that new leaders had just been elected and therefore still needed more time to each prove their credentials in their new areas of service.
The awards ceremony, in its own uniqueness, fuses the presentation of awards with a pageant event that also seeks to crown the King and Queen of Mashujaa. This year was no different! The pageant was flagged off by the outgoing Mashujaa Miss Popularity, Nina Wangari Gikunda, giving way for 15 male and female models to compete for titles. Edward Karaba, the Mr Environment Kenya 2016 beat 4 other models to become the Mr Mashujaa while Brenda Kahura became the new Queen of Mashujaa.
The models who competed to become the King and Queen of Mashujaa are mostly previous winners of other previously held beauty pageants. The other models who graced the runway this year included Maureen Wavinya ,Pauline Njeri, Purity Wanjiku, Rose Cheredi, Fridah Muthoni , Ruth Njenga, Angela Nzisa, Maryann Wairimu, Brendah Kahura, Ladona Akinyi, Peter Kamau, Henry Kipkorir, Brian Peter and Caleb Simiyu.
