Known in the streets as Yvonne Afrostreet, Yvonne Odhiambo is the fashion-preneur behind Afrostreet Kollektions. In 2012, Yvonne and two other models, Melanie Watchie and Gloria Baraza started the fashion line and later that year got an opportunity to vitrine their first collection at Nairobi Fashion Market.
During the 2013 Swahili Fashion Week, Yvonne Odhiambo brought Afrostreet Kollektions to the fore by giving it a description of how Ankara and African it was, representing the African girl in the best way they could with a bit of western touch to it. The target market being one that is young at heart.
Yvonne being one of the best fashion designers in Kenya and her fashion house bringing out radiant festschrift, she got a chance in 2014 to dress the Big Brother contestants from Kenya; Sabina Stadler and Melvin Alusa. This was slightly two years after starting Afrostreet Kollektions, and was seen as an accomplishment considering that she had not been in the designing game for that long.
Yvonne is also recognized for having dressed big artists in Africa like Yemi Alade, Flavour, Vanessa Mdee not forgetting Sauti Sol. She is among the few designers who got a chance to dress the entire Coke Studio Band during the third season of Coke Studio Africa. Afrostreet Kollektions is a clear definition of vogue; how they stand out in their style and how they look at the latest trends for inspiration.
Yvonne said Afrostreet is a collection born out of love, its intention is to make a person feel fabulous everyday. Just from the definition, love is all about affection, peace, comfort and warmth, as witnessed at Fashion High Tea 2019. Her designs were vibrant, with pretty impeccable colors and a taste of sunshine which she themed ‘Happy Place’. Surprisingly by the end of the show her collection was almost sold out.
Yvonne Odhiambo’s line is all about African designs with denim prints, animal prints and other western fabrics. Also offers clothing, accessories and shoes. Yvonne’s designs can be found at Annabelle Onyango’s store Republi.ke
Being aware that just highlighting 10 of them from the hundreds we have and thousands more upcoming is quite limiting, we opt not to rank them in any order of relevance, importance or achievement, but leave that to your judgement.
